Otoplasty

WHAT IS AN OTOPLASTY or EAR PINNING?

Otoplasty is a procedure to reposition prominent ears or improve the shape of ears. Protruding or asymmetrical ears can look unnatural and impact one’s self-esteem.  This procedure can be performed on adults or children over the age of 6 years old.

WHAT CAUSES PROMINENT EARS?

Prominent or protruding ears are most commonly caused by absent or underdeveloped antihelical folds or an overdeveloped conchal bowl. They can be aesthetically displeasing and a source of psychological distress. These conditions may be unilateral or bilateral. If this is identified in babies less than 6 months, non-surgical treatment may be effective through taping, splinting, or holding due to the presence of mother’s estrogen. For older children, surgical correction may be needed.

WHAT IS YOUR TREATMENT APPROACH TO OTOPLASTY?

The ear pinning is accomplished through an incision on the back of the ear.  The procedure is done with use of permanent sutures that hold the ear in its new position and shape. There can be some degree of cartilage removal but only as necessary. The incisions are then closed with absorbable sutures.

WHAT TYPE OF ANESTHESIA IS USED DURING OTOPLASTY?

Otoplasty is performed under general anesthesia in an outpatient setting.

WHAT IS THE POST OPERATIVE CARE AND RECOVERY LIKE AFTER OTOPLASTY?

A compression wrap will be placed around the head to hold ears into position continuously for about one week.

You can return to work within a few days, but children should not return to school for about one to two weeks. Pain medication and antibiotics will be prescribed following otoplasty.

WHAT ARE THE RESULTS OF OTOPLASTY?

Otoplasty will provide a more natural, symmetrical, and flatter ears. Ear prominence is corrected, and it will allow you to gain self-confidence.
